The weak version will produce something generic — the kind of content you could find on any SEO-farm blog from 2018. The strong version will produce something scoped, data-grounded, and immediately usable.

Key insight: Every token in your prompt is a constraint. Constraints reduce the probability space the model has to explore, which means it spends more of its capacity producing exactly what you need instead of guessing what that might be.

Mistake 3: Forgetting to give context

The model has no idea who you are, what your situation is, or what has already happened. Without context, it answers the generic version of your question — not your specific version.

How should I respond to this negative review?

Fix

I run a boutique coffee shop with 4.7 stars on Google. A customer left a 1-star review claiming their order was wrong and staff were rude. Our staff member says the order was correct. Write a professional public response that acknowledges the experience, defends the team without being defensive, and invites the customer back. Max 80 words.

Mistake 4: Asking multiple unrelated things in one prompt

Stacking several unrelated requests degrades the quality of every one of them. The model cannot give deep attention to multiple independent problems simultaneously.

Fix

Break it into 4 separate prompts — one for each task. Send them sequentially and reference previous outputs as context in later prompts.

Mistake 5: Not using role assignment

Skipping role assignment means the model answers as a generic assistant rather than as a specialist. The difference in depth and vocabulary is significant for technical or professional tasks.

Once you have the fundamentals down, these five advanced techniques will push the quality of your outputs significantly further.

Chain of Thought: Force the model to reason before answering

Appending a thinking instruction to your prompt causes the model to work through the problem step by step before committing to an answer. This dramatically improves accuracy on anything involving logic, math, multi-step reasoning, or nuanced judgment. The simple phrase "think step by step" is one of the most well-documented interventions in prompting research.

Before answering, think through this step by step. Consider edge cases and contradictory evidence before forming your conclusion. [Your actual question or task here]

Few-Shot Prompting: Show the model what good output looks like

Instead of describing the format you want, show it. Providing 2–3 examples of ideal input-output pairs before your actual request gives the model an extremely precise target to hit. This technique is especially powerful for stylistic consistency, custom formatting, or domain-specific language the model might not default to.

XML / Structured Instructions: Especially powerful with Claude

Wrapping sections of your prompt in XML-style tags helps models — particularly Claude — parse complex instructions without confusing what is background context, what is the task, and what is the input material. This approach scales well for long, multi-part prompts where ambiguity could otherwise cause partial compliance.

Asking for Alternatives: Break out of single-path thinking

When you ask AI for a single answer, you get its most probable output — which is often the most conventional one. Explicitly requesting multiple distinct approaches forces the model to explore the possibility space and gives you real options to evaluate. This is particularly valuable for creative work, strategic decisions, and technical architecture choices.

Iterative Prompting: How to follow up effectively

Almost no complex task is perfectly solved in a single prompt. The most effective users treat AI like a collaborative partner — they get a first draft, then refine it through targeted follow-ups. The key is being specific about what is wrong and what you want changed, rather than just saying "make it better."
