What is a prompt?
A prompt is the instruction you give an AI โ like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini โ to tell it what you want. It can be a question, a command, or a detailed brief. The AI reads your prompt and generates a response based on it. Put simply: the prompt is your input, the AI's answer is the output.
Prompt meaning, in plain English
The word "prompt" means to prompt someone into action โ to cue a response. In AI, a prompt does exactly that: it's the text you type to cue the model into producing something. Ask "what does prompt mean" in the context of tools like ChatGPT, and the answer is simply: the message you send to get an answer back.
Everything you type into an AI chat is a prompt โ whether it's two words or two paragraphs. The quality of that prompt largely decides the quality of what you get back.
Prompt examples
Here's the same goal written as a weak prompt and a strong one:
โ "write something about our new app"
โ
"You are a marketing copywriter. Write a 4-sentence launch announcement for our new budgeting app, aimed at students. Friendly tone, end with a call to download."
Both are valid prompts. The second gives the AI a role, a task, context and an output format โ so it doesn't have to guess.
Types of prompts
โ Questions
"What's the capital of Peru?" โ the simplest prompt.
โ๏ธ Commands
"Summarize this article in 5 bullets." โ an instruction.
๐ญ Role prompts
"Act as a senior lawyer and review this clause."
๐งฉ Templates
Reusable prompts with [[placeholders]] for the parts that change.
What makes a good prompt
Strong prompts usually have four things. Get these right and output quality jumps:
- Role โ who the AI should act as ("expert analyst", "friendly tutor").
- Task โ exactly what you want done, stated plainly.
- Context โ the background the AI needs to get it right.
- Output format โ the shape of the answer (list, table, email, JSON).
If writing all that every time sounds tedious, it is โ which is why people use a one-click prompt enhancer to add this structure automatically, and a prompt manager to save the prompts that work.
Prompt vs prompt engineering
A prompt is the input itself. Prompt engineering is the skill of designing prompts that reliably get great results โ choosing the role, structure and examples that steer the model. You don't need to be a prompt engineer to write good prompts; you just need to be specific.

Frequently asked questions
What is a prompt?
A prompt is the text instruction you give an AI model such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to tell it what you want. It can be a question, a command or a detailed brief โ the AI reads the prompt and generates a response based on it. In short, the prompt is your input and the AI's answer is the output.
What does prompt mean in AI?
In AI, "prompt" means the input you give a language model to produce an output. The clearer and more specific the prompt โ with a role, task, context and desired format โ the better and more relevant the AI's response.
What is an example of a prompt?
A simple prompt is "Write a birthday message for my coworker." A better one is "You are a witty copywriter. Write three short, warm birthday messages for a coworker I don't know well โ friendly but not over-familiar." Both are prompts; the second gives the AI more to work with.
What makes a good prompt?
A good prompt states who the AI should act as (role), exactly what you want (task), any background it needs (context), and the shape of the answer (output format). Being specific about these four things is the biggest lever on output quality.
Is a prompt the same as a question?
A question is one kind of prompt, but prompts can also be commands ("Summarize this article"), templates with placeholders, or long structured briefs. Any input that tells the AI what to do is a prompt.
